Valaste Waterfall

The Valaste waterfall plunges over the North Estonian Klint escarpment, dropping about 30 metres to the rocky shore below. It is the tallest waterfall in Estonia, which is saying something in a country with almost no significant elevation change. The viewing platform above gives a good angle on the drop, and a path leads down the cliff to the base for a view looking up.

The falls are at their best in spring, when snowmelt from the fields above drives a substantial flow. In a dry summer the waterfall can disappoint. The surrounding area is covered in mixed forest, and the coastal path connecting Valaste to Toila (about 5 kilometres) is one of the better short walks in northeastern Estonia, following the cliff edge with occasional views down to the sea.

A story
At 30.6 metres, Valaste is the highest waterfall in Estonia — a title that might seem underwhelming in alpine terms, but in a country as flat as Estonia it represents something genuinely dramatic. The waterfall only runs at full volume after snowmelt in April and May; by late summer it can reduce to a thin trickle over the limestone face.
