Coastal Hiking Trail to Tjørnuvík

The walking trail west from Gjógv follows the north coast of Eysturoy for about 14 km to Tjørnuvík, a village at the far end of the island with views across the sound to the sea stacks Risin and Kellingin. The path climbs steeply out of the village, crosses open moorland at around 300 metres, and drops back to sea level past several abandoned farm ruins before arriving at Tjørnuvík.

Allow four to five hours one way. The trail is not technical but the terrain is exposed and the footing is wet in places even in dry weather. A car shuttle between the two villages is the easiest way to manage logistics; without one you are looking at a long day out and back. Start early to have the best chance of clear weather.

A story
The trail west from Gjógv follows the cliff edge for most of its length, so close to the drop that in high wind sections you walk bent against the gusts. Locals once used this path regularly to reach the next village; today it is walked almost entirely by visitors.
