Funningur Church

Six kilometres south over the mountain road from Gjogv lies Funningur, an even smaller village with one of the ten surviving old wooden churches in the Faroes. Built in 1847 with the characteristic tarred timber walls and turf roof, it sits low against the slope above the village.

The interior is plain and worth the short detour if the door is open. The churchyard, ringed by a low stone wall, has views down the fjord. The drive from Gjogv over the pass is itself one of the great short roads in the islands.
