Dúvugarðar Farmhouse Museum

Turf-roofed farmhouse showing centuries of isolated Faroese life

The most photographed building in Saksun is this turf-roofed farmhouse, which has been operating as a museum since the mid-twentieth century. The interior shows how a Faroese farming family lived from the seventeenth century onward — the furniture is original, the ceiling beams are low, and the whole place has the slightly damp, slightly smoky smell of a house that was built before insulation was a concept.

It is small and takes perhaps half an hour to look around properly. What it does well is making the isolation of pre-road Saksun tangible. These people kept livestock in winter, fished when they could, and otherwise made do entirely within the valley.
