Kirkjuvatn

Kirkjuvatn (literally "Church Lake") is a small mountain lake in the bowl above the village of Fámjin, about an hour's walk on a marked path that climbs steeply behind the church. The setting is classic Suðuroy — a glacial cwm of grass and basalt with cliffs rising on either side, and on a clear day a view back across the village to the open Atlantic.

The full circuit of the lake and a return via the valley below takes around three hours and is one of the most rewarding walks on the southernmost island. Bring waterproofs and good footwear: the weather changes fast here, even by Faroese standards, and the path is boggy in stretches.

A story
The lake gets its name — Church Lake — from a chapel that once stood beside it. Faroese folklore claims the chapel was built after a vision and that the lake has unusually warm water on certain days as a result; in practice the water is icy year-round and the wind that funnels down the valley keeps it that way.
