The white wooden church in the centre of the village dates from 1862 and replaces an older church on the same site. Like most Faroese village churches it is plain on the outside and simply furnished within — wooden pews, a painted altarpiece, a model ship hanging from the ceiling.
The churchyard is the most likely spot to find the old human bones unearthed in 2009 and dated to around the year 1000. They are not on display, but the discovery is what tied Hvalba directly to the earliest Norse settlement of the islands.
