Húsið uttan Ánna (Local Museum)

The local museum in Sandvík is housed in Húsið uttan Ánna, a turf-roofed timber building from 1866 that is one of the best-preserved examples of traditional Faroese domestic architecture on Suðuroy. The black-and-white painted exterior and heavy turf roof are immediately recognisable as old Faroese building style, adapted for a climate that demands insulation and wind resistance.

Inside, the museum covers the history of Sandvík and the surrounding area, including the fishing culture and the communities that depended on it. Opening hours are limited and variable — ask locally or at the tourist information in Tvøroyri (the main town on Suðuroy) before making the journey specifically for the museum.

A story
The house name "Húsið uttan Ánna" translates as "the House East by the River" — a characteristically Faroese way of naming places by their position relative to local landmarks rather than giving them personal names. The building dates from 1866 and its black-and-white painted timbers with a turf roof are a textbook example of traditional Faroese construction.
