The beach at Sandvík is one of very few sandy beaches in the entire Faroe Islands, which are overwhelmingly rocky and cliffy. The sand is pale, the bay curves gently, and on a rare clear day the views across to the mountains of the surrounding island are striking. The water is cold — this is the North Atlantic — but the beach is a good place to walk and look for seabirds, which are numerous along this coast.
The beach forms the northern edge of the village and can be reached on foot from the main road in minutes. It is completely undeveloped — no facilities, no lifeguards, just sand and sea. Come prepared for wind, which is a constant in Suðuroy.
