Skaðagrindin Disaster Memorial

A monument in the village commemorates the men of Sandvík lost in the Skaðagrindin boat disaster of 1915, when a fishing crew was caught in a sudden storm. Fishing tragedies of this kind shaped the culture and consciousness of Faroese communities profoundly — the sea was a constant presence and a constant risk, and nearly every family had losses to mourn.

The memorial is simple, as these things tend to be in the Faroes — a stone, names, a date. It stands alongside the monument to the writer Martin Joensen, who grew up in this village and whose novels described the fishing life of the islands.

A story
The Skaðagrindin disaster of 1915 claimed the lives of men from this tiny community in a single event — a proportion of the population that would have been devastating to any village. Memorials to fishing disasters are found throughout the Faroe Islands, a reminder that the sea that fed these communities also regularly claimed them.
