Sumbiarholmur

Small rocky islet just off the village, with seabird colonies

Just offshore from Sumba, Sumbiarholmur is a small rocky islet that sits in the sea below the village. It is not accessible without a boat, but is clearly visible from the coastline and from the road toward Akraberg. The islet is a seabird nesting site — puffins, razorbills, and guillemots use the ledges in summer — and has the typical Faroese character of small outlying rock: dramatic, surrounded by churning water, and seemingly indifferent to any human interest.

The view from the southern edge of Sumba, looking toward Sumbiarholmur and the open Atlantic beyond, is one of the defining images of this end of the Faroe Islands. The combination of the islet, the cliffs, and the light on the water at the end of a long summer day is worth the journey south to find it.
