Krambatangi Ferry Terminal

The ferry terminal connecting Suðuroy to the rest of the Faroe Islands

Krambatangi is the ferry terminal for Suðuroy, located on the southern shore of Trongisvágsfjørður about two kilometres from Tvøroyri by road. The Smyril ferry runs several times daily to Tórshavn, with the crossing taking around two hours — one of the longer inter-island routes in the Faroes, and one of the more atmospheric. The ferry passes through the mouth of the fjord and out across open water, with views of Suðuroy's cliffs from the sea that you don't get from land.

Arriving at Krambatangi by ferry is the standard way to reach Tvøroyri — the island has no airport, which contributes significantly to its uncrowded character. A road runs from the terminal into Tvøroyri; there are often taxis or minibuses meeting the ferry. Check Strandfaraskip Landsins (the national ferry operator) for schedules, which vary seasonally.

A story
Before Krambatangi was built, Suðuroy was the most isolated of the Faroese islands — the crossing to Tórshavn was a full-day journey in rough weather and impossible in storms. The ferry has transformed the island's accessibility, but Suðuroy still feels noticeably less visited than the northern islands, which suits it.
