Mykines Ferry

Ferries to puffin island depart from Sørvágur's harbour in summer

The harbour at Sørvágur is the embarkation point for ferries to Mykines, the westernmost and most remote of the Faroese islands. Mykines is famous above all for its Atlantic puffins, which nest in their tens of thousands on the grassy cliffs of Mykinesholmur, the small islet connected to the main island by a footbridge. In summer, puffins sit barely an arm's length from the path — a genuinely extraordinary encounter.

The ferry crossing takes around 45 minutes each way and runs daily in summer (roughly May to September), weather permitting. Atlantic swells mean cancellations are not uncommon, and a day trip can turn into an overnight stay if the boat cannot return. Book tickets in advance through the Strandfaraskip Landsins (SSL) website, especially in July and August when demand is high. A helicopter service (Atlantic Airways) also connects Sørvágur to Mykines but runs less frequently.

The island is small — you can walk across it in a few hours — but the puffin colony alone justifies the crossing. Bring binoculars, waterproofs, and lunch; there is a small café in the village but no shop.
