Vágar Airport (IATA: FAE) is the sole airport in the Faroe Islands, built on the flat ground at the eastern end of Sørvágur. Originally constructed by British forces during the World War II occupation of the Faroes, it has been expanded and modernised since and now handles a steady mix of scheduled and charter flights.
Atlantic Airways, the national carrier, operates year-round direct services to Copenhagen and seasonal connections to Reykjavík, Edinburgh, Bergen, and several other northern European cities. SAS flies from Copenhagen in summer. The airport is compact enough that you clear arrivals and are in a rental car within minutes of landing.
From the airport, Sørvágur is a five-minute drive. Tórshavn is about 50 km east — an hour by car via the sub-sea tunnel to Streymoy, or by regular bus. Rental cars are available at the airport and it is by far the easiest way to explore Vágar and the wider islands. The Airport Hotel sits adjacent to the terminal if you need a first or last night without hassle.
