Hämeenlinna is very easy to reach from Helsinki by train — the journey on the main Helsinki–Tampere line takes just over an hour, and trains run frequently throughout the day. The railway station is in the city centre, about fifteen minutes' walk from Häme Castle.
By car, the E12 motorway between Helsinki and Tampere passes through Hämeenlinna, making it a natural stop on the journey north. Buses from Helsinki's Kamppi bus station also serve the town and take about ninety minutes. There is no airport; the nearest is Helsinki-Vantaa.
