Botania Botanical Garden

Botania is the botanical garden of the University of Eastern Finland, attached to the university campus, and it is one of the best attractions in Joensuu. The complex contains a large greenhouse built to simulate multiple tropical and subtropical ecosystems: a tropical house with free-flying butterflies, an equatorial rainforest section, a Mediterranean dry climate house, and zones devoted to plants from specific regions of the world. The temperature contrast on a cold Finnish day is startling.

The butterfly house is the headline draw — dozens of species fly freely among the tropical plants, landing on visitors and feeding from fruit placed around the exhibits. The outdoor gardens are less dramatic but pleasant in summer, with a kitchen garden, medicinal plant collections and native Finnish flora sections. The attached café is good. Budget two hours for a full visit.

A story
Botania holds the distinction of being one of the northernmost tropical butterfly gardens in the world. At 63 degrees north — further north than Anchorage, Alaska — the existence of a functioning tropical hothouse with free-flying butterflies and exotic plants feels genuinely improbable. The garden's creators deliberately chose contrast as the concept: the more extreme the Finnish winter outside, the more surreal the tropical warmth within.
