Joensuu punches above its weight for a city of 80,000. The university gives it energy and keeps prices down; the riverside setting and the proximity to Koli National Park and the great lake landscapes of North Karelia give it scenery. The city centre is compact and walkable, the Botania tropical garden is a genuine surprise at this latitude, and the music festival in July is one of Finland's best.
