Ilosaarirock Festival

Ilosaarirock takes place in July on the banks of the Pielisjoki river in central Joensuu, covering a festival ground just a short walk from the city centre. For three days it is one of Finland's major cultural events, with multiple stages hosting Finnish and international rock, metal, pop and indie acts, along with smaller stages for emerging artists and DJs.

The festival is known for its relaxed atmosphere and good organisation. The setting — riverside parkland in a small Finnish city — is unusually pleasant for a major festival. Joensuu fills with visitors and the city's bars and restaurants are busy around the clock. Book accommodation several months in advance if you plan to attend. Day tickets are available but weekend passes sell out quickly.

A story
Ilosaarirock has been held since 1971, which makes it one of the oldest rock festivals in Finland and one of the oldest still-running outdoor rock events in Europe. It began as a small local gathering on the island of Ilosaari (now part of the festival site) and grew into a major national event attracting 50,000-plus visitors over three days. The Heavy Metal Knitting World Championships, held in Joensuu as a tongue-in-cheek side event, brings international attention of a different kind.
