Eating Out

Kuopio's food identity is built around the lake — freshwater fish dominates menus, from smoked muikku (vendace) to pike-perch. Kalakukko, the regional fish pie baked in a rye crust, is the dish you must try while in the city. The market hall is the best place for it; restaurants around the market square serve it in more formal settings.

Finnish cuisine is straightforward and seasonal — expect clean flavours, good produce, and limited pretension. The city has a handful of good restaurants and a lively summer terrace culture around the market square.
