Kuopio Cathedral

Neoclassical Lutheran cathedral, seat of the Diocese of Kuopio

Kuopio Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko) is the dominant landmark of the city centre, a Neoclassical Evangelical Lutheran church built in 1815 to designs by Carlo Bassi. The pale stone building with its twin towers and restrained classical decoration stands a short walk east of the market square and is the seat of the Diocese of Kuopio.

The interior is spacious and well-proportioned, with clear northern light and the characteristic simplicity of Finnish Lutheran church design. It can be visited freely during opening hours. The surrounding Snellman Park, named after the Finnish statesman and philosopher Johan Vilhelm Snellman who was born in Kuopio, is a pleasant spot to sit in summer.
