Kuopio Market Hall

Art Nouveau market hall — the best place to try kalakukko

The Kuopio Market Hall, built in 1901 in the Art Nouveau style, is one of the finest market buildings in Finland. It sits on the edge of the main market square and has been selling local produce, fish, and Finnish specialities without interruption for over a century. The building's iron and glass interior and ornate facades are worth admiring even if you are not buying anything.

The main reason to visit is kalakukko — the traditional Savo fish pie baked in a rye crust that is considered the dish of the region. Several stalls in the hall sell it; you can buy a whole loaf or a slice. The fish filling is usually muikku (vendace), a small freshwater fish from the surrounding lakes. The market is also a good place for Finnish cheeses, smoked fish, and local berry preserves.

A story
Kalakukko — a whole fish baked inside a rye bread loaf — has been a staple of the Savo region for centuries. The sealed bread acts as a slow cooker: the fish steams inside for hours until tender. It looks alarming when cut open and tastes extraordinary. The market hall is the best place in Finland to eat it.
