Kittilä Wooden Church

19th-century wooden church by Carl Ludwig Engel that survived the Lapland War.

Kittilä's wooden church was designed by Carl Ludwig Engel and built in the early 1830s. It is a modest, pale northern church rather than a grand monument, but its survival matters: much of Lapland was burned by retreating German troops during the Lapland War.

It stands in the centre of Kittilä and is worth a short stop if you are passing through between the airport, Levi, and the wider fell country.
