Kittilä is less a single town than a large slice of western Finnish Lapland: taiga forest, bogs, villages along the Ounasjoki, ski traffic around Levi, and fell country stretching toward Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The municipal centre is small, but the area around it is one of Finland's busiest winter destinations.
Most visitors come for Levi, one of Finland's best-known ski resorts, or for hiking and cross-country skiing on the nearby fells. The landscape is open and northern: midnight sun in early summer, deep snow in winter, and good chances of northern lights on clear dark nights.
Kittilä also has a rougher backcountry side. Some villages were remote enough to survive the Lapland War destruction that burned much of the region, and the Suurikuusikko gold mine east of Levi is one of Europe's largest. Give the place time if you can; the distances are larger than they look on a map.
