Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park stretches across western Lapland, with part of it inside Kittilä municipality. The landscape is classic fell country: rounded treeless summits, open views, old taiga forest, bogs, lakes, and winter trails that seem to run forever.
The historic Pallastunturi-Hetta route, opened in the 1930s, is Finland's oldest marked hiking trail. Around Kittilä, trailheads near Aakenustunturi and the Levi side give access to day walks and cross-country ski tracks. In winter, weather changes fast and darkness comes early; in summer, mosquitoes and wet ground are the trade-off for midnight sun.
