The Särestöniemi Museum preserves the home, studio, and gallery of Reidar Särestöniemi, one of Lapland's best-known modern painters. His work drew heavily on northern animals, light, snow, and myth, and the setting in Kaukonen village helps explain why.
The museum is about 25 km from Kittilä centre, so it works best by car. It is one of the best cultural stops in the municipality, especially if your trip is otherwise all skiing, cabins, and trails.
