Patvinsuo National Park

A wilderness of bog, lake, and forest about 50 kilometres south-east of Lieksa, established as a national park in 1982. Boardwalks cross some of the largest unspoiled mires in eastern Finland, and the park is one of the few places south of Lapland where you have a real chance of seeing brown bear tracks, wolverines, and migrating cranes.

Three marked hiking trails, all leaving from the visitor centre at Suomu — a short boardwalk loop, a half-day route past lakes and a watchtower, and a two-day trail through the deepest mires. Bring repellent in June and July; the mosquitoes here are notorious even by Finnish standards.
