Mannerheim's Saloon Car

Preserved wartime railway carriage used by Marshal Mannerheim beside Mikkeli station

Mannerheim's Saloon Car sits on a short siding by Mikkeli railway station, a modest wooden carriage with a large place in Finnish wartime memory. C.G.E. Mannerheim used it while commanding Finland's defence during the Winter War and Continuation War, and the car travelled tens of thousands of kilometres as part of the Defence Command train.

The catch is access: the interior is normally viewed from the outside and is opened to the public only on Mannerheim's birthday, 4 June. Even so, it pairs neatly with the Headquarters Museum and gives Mikkeli's military history a more human scale, right down to the sleeping cabins, kitchen, and saloon compartment that made command-by-rail possible.
