Mikkeli divides neatly into its wartime history and its lake country setting. The military museums are the most distinctive draw — nowhere else in Finland is the story of the Winter War and Continuation War told with such immediacy. But the town's real pleasures are quieter: the lake views, the cathedral, and the easy access to the Saimaa waterscape that surrounds it.
