Naisvuori Observation Tower

The Naisvuori observation tower stands on a wooded hill north of the town centre and gives the best panoramic view over Mikkeli and its surrounding lake country. The climb to the tower — either on foot through the park or by a short funicular — takes about fifteen minutes from the market square. The view encompasses Lake Saimaa to the east, forests stretching in every direction, and the town laid out below.

The tower itself is a slender steel structure that allows you to look out above the treetops. The hill beneath it is a popular city park with open-air concert venues used in summer. An amusement area and a small café operate here seasonally. In winter the slopes are used for skiing and sledging.

A story
Naisvuori — "Women's Hill" in Finnish — gets its name from a legend that women from the town sheltered here during a battle with Russian forces in the early 19th century. The hill was also used as an observation post during the wartime years when Mikkeli served as military headquarters, and the views from the tower cover the same lake-and-forest panorama that Finnish commanders surveyed during the Continuation War.
