Moominworld

Tove Jansson's characters brought to life on Kailo Island.

Moominworld sits on Kailo Island, connected to the mainland by a short footbridge. The park recreates the world of Tove Jansson's books — the blue Moominhouse, Snork Maiden's house, the lighthouse — with care and without irony. It is aimed at young children, but adults who grew up with the books find it quietly moving.

The season runs from mid-June to mid-August, with an additional winter week in February called Winter Moominworld. Tickets should be booked well in advance in summer, especially for weekends. The island is small enough to see everything in a day, and the pace is deliberately unhurried.

A story
Tove Jansson visited the park before it opened in 1993 and gave her blessing — a detail that matters, because Moominworld feels nothing like a typical theme park. There are no roller coasters, no queues for rides, and no corporate gloss. Children wander through Moominhouse, meet characters on the beach, and take boat rides across the island at their own pace.
