Naantali Old Town

Wooden houses, cobbled lanes, and craft shops above the harbour.

Naantali's old town occupies the ridge above the harbour, a compact grid of painted wooden houses in yellow, red, and ochre. The streets are narrow enough that neighbours could almost shake hands across them. Today the ground floors hold small galleries, artisan shops, and cafés — the kind of places that close in September and reopen with the Moominworld season.

Walking the old town takes less than an hour, but it rewards slow movement. Look for the decorative carved woodwork on the older houses and the views down to the harbour between the buildings. The church at the top of the hill anchors the whole neighbourhood.

A story
The old town was built mostly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, after the medieval convent that sustained the town was dissolved. The wooden houses have survived almost intact — a rarity in Finland, where fire took so many historic town centres. On summer evenings the lanes smell of warm timber and the light stays golden until nearly midnight.
