Uusikaupunki's old centre is a grid of wooden houses, courtyards, and calm streets near the market square and harbour. Much of the Empire-style townscape follows an 1856 plan, after fire reshaped the older settlement.
It is best seen on foot. Do not rush it; the pleasure is in painted timber, small gardens, and the feeling of a Finnish coastal town that has kept its scale.
