Hermitage-Vyborg Center

The Hermitage-Vyborg Center occupies a historic building in the old town and mounts temporary exhibitions drawn from the Hermitage's vast collections in St Petersburg. The branch focuses on art and history with particular relevance to the Karelian region and the cultural crossroads that Vyborg has always represented — Swedish, Finnish, Russian, and European threads all converge here.

The exhibitions change regularly and range from archaeology to applied arts to 20th-century painting. The building itself is worth entering for its restored interiors, and the gift shop carries Hermitage publications. Check current exhibition schedules before visiting — the centre is closed on certain days and the programme varies seasonally.

A story
The Hermitage opened a branch in Vyborg in 2010 — one of only a handful of satellite centres for the world's largest art museum. The choice was deliberate: Vyborg's complicated history makes it a natural venue for exhibitions exploring the connections between Russian, Finnish, Swedish, and European culture.
