Monrepos Park

Monrepos is an extraordinary landscape park on the rocky island of Linnasaari, about 2 km northwest of Vyborg's centre. Laid out in the early 19th century in the English romantic tradition, the park winds through granite outcrops, forests, and bays, with pavilions, obelisks, and bridges placed at moments of particular beauty or dramatic prospect. It is one of the finest examples of romantic landscape design in northern Europe.

The park was neglected for much of the Soviet period and fell into significant disrepair, but a major restoration completed in the 2020s returned many of its structures and paths to something close to their original state. The main island with its rocky headlands and views across the bay is especially fine. Allow two to three hours to walk the main circuits. Reach the park on foot from the city centre or by taxi.

A story
Monrepos was designed in the English landscape tradition by Luigi Rusca in the early 19th century for the Baron von Nicolay, a Swiss-German nobleman who served as tutor to Tsar Paul I. The park's inscriptions and monuments were placed by a man who had stood at the centre of Russian imperial power — then retreated to this rocky Baltic island to think about death.
