The boulders that give Annot its character are not ordinary rocks — they are Grès d'Annot, massive blocks of Eocene sandstone that litter the hillsides above and around the town like the abandoned toys of some enormous child. Some are as large as houses; many have been hollowed and shaped by centuries of wind and rain into smooth, curved surfaces. Walking among them feels genuinely strange, as if the landscape has been rearranged by some force that didn't bother to explain itself.
A waymarked trail from the old town leads through the main boulder field and takes about an hour and a half. The route passes some boulders that have been built into medieval structures — a wall attached to one face here, a wine cellar carved into another there. The light in the late afternoon is particularly good for photography. The walk is not strenuous and the path is well-maintained.
