The Fontaine des Éléphants is Chambéry's oddest landmark: four elephant heads and forequarters supporting a column in the middle of town. It was built in 1838 for General Benoît de Boigne, who made his fortune in India before returning to Savoy as a benefactor.
Locals have long given it a less formal nickname, because the elephants have fronts but no backs. That small absurdity is part of its charm; you will pass it often while walking the centre.
