Chambéry is the old capital of Savoy, set in a valley between the Bauges and Chartreuse massifs. It is often treated as a gateway to ski resorts and Alpine lakes, but the city itself has enough history and street life for a rewarding day.
The centre is compact and good on foot. Medieval lanes, covered passages, arcades, and Italianate facades lead between the Château des Ducs de Savoie, the Fontaine des Éléphants, and the cathedral. The mood is different from postcard Provence or grand Paris: more Alpine, more Savoyard, with cheese, vermouth, and mountain weather always nearby.
Chambéry also works as a softer base than the high resorts. You can spend the morning in museums and old streets, then be on the edge of Lac du Bourget, the Bauges, or the Chartreuse in short order. It is not a place to rush through just because the train line continues uphill.
