Chambéry's fine arts museum is useful on a rainy Alpine day and better than a small-city gallery has to be. Its collection reflects the city's old ties across the Alps, with Italian painting a particular strength.
It sits close to the station and the old centre, so it is easy to fold into a half-day walk rather than treating it as a separate excursion.
