Abriès and Ristolas merged into a single commune in 2019 — the easternmost settlement in the Queyras, hard up against the Italian border. The villages serve a small ski station in winter and a busy hiking scene in summer, with trails fanning out toward Monte Viso (Italy's "King Stone").
The Réserve Naturelle de Ristolas-Mont-Viso starts just east of the village — almost 2,300 hectares of mountain wilderness protected for its plant and bird life. Many of the best long-distance walks in the Queyras start from here.
