Col Agnel

2,744m pass to Italy, second-highest paved road in the Alps

The Col Agnel climbs from Molines up to the Italian border at 2,744 metres, making it one of the highest paved passes in the Alps. The road is open roughly from June to October, depending on snow.

On a clear day, the view east into the Piedmontese valleys is exceptional. The pass is a regular fixture on long-distance cycling tours and has appeared in the Tour de France. On the Italian side it drops into the Val Varaita.

A story
The Col Agnel is the second-highest paved road pass in the Alps (after the Iseran), reaching 2,744 metres at the Franco-Italian border. The road on the French side was only fully paved in the 1970s. The Tour de France has crossed it several times, always with carnage in the breakaway groups.
