Getting Around

Saint-Étienne has a good tram network that covers most points of interest. Lines T1 and T2 are the most useful for visitors, connecting the train stations to the city centre and the Cité du Design. Tickets are bought from machines at tram stops and are valid for one hour of travel including transfers.

The city centre is compact enough to walk. From the Place du Peuple to the train station at Châteaucreux is about 20 minutes on foot. The Musée d'Art Moderne in Saint-Priest-en-Jarez is best reached by tram line T1 to the terminus.

Cycling is possible and the city has a bike-share scheme, but Saint-Étienne's hills — it sits in a shallow valley with steep sides — make cycling more effort than in a flat city. The central streets are manageable; the outer districts are harder work.

Taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap by French standards. Ride-hailing apps work well here.
