Musée d'Angoulême

The Musée d'Angoulême occupies a wing of the Hôtel de Ville and contains a mixed collection of archaeology, fine arts, and natural history. The archaeological section is the strongest: finds from Roman and Gallo-Roman sites across the Charente region, including mosaics, sculptures, and everyday objects that give a more detailed picture of local Roman life than the sparser collections in many regional museums.

The fine arts collection includes paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries, with particular strength in the 17th century Dutch and Flemish work. The natural history section covers the Charentais environment and is mainly of local interest. The museum is not large but is well-organised and makes a worthwhile 90-minute visit alongside the cathedral.
