Puy-Saint-Front

Medieval old town below the cathedral domes

Puy-Saint-Front is the medieval heart of Périgueux: a tight web of stone-paved streets running down from the cathedral to the river, lined with hôtels particuliers, half-timbered houses and the occasional Renaissance courtyard. The rue Limogeanne and rue Aubergerie are the best streets to wander, with carved doorways and turret stairs to spot on almost every façade.

The quarter is also where you eat and shop — most of the city's good restaurants and food shops cluster within a few hundred metres of the cathedral square. Twice a week the place de la Clautre fills with stalls for the open-air market, and from November to March a separate truffle market sets up in the place Saint-Louis.
