Clos Fourtet sits close to the town walls, which makes it one of the easiest serious estates to understand on foot. Its vineyards lie on the limestone plateau that gives Saint-Émilion wines much of their structure and reputation.
Visits depend on current estate policy and should be booked rather than assumed. Even if you do not go inside, the walk past the vines helps connect the medieval town to the wine landscape around it; Saint-Émilion is not a pretty village beside vineyards, but a village made by them.
