Monolithic Church of Saint-Émilion

Vast underground church carved from Saint-Émilion's limestone hill.

The Monolithic Church is Saint-Émilion's essential sight: a vast underground church carved directly out of the limestone hill. From outside, the bell tower dominates the skyline; below, the church opens into a cool, shadowed space that feels more like a quarry turned sacred than a conventional building.

Entry is usually by guided visit, which is no bad thing because the underground spaces are easy to underestimate from the square. The church ties together the town's geology, religion, and wine cellars in one place: everything here begins with the stone.

A story
The church was not built so much as excavated. Medieval workers removed thousands of cubic metres of limestone, leaving a hidden nave beneath the town and a bell tower above it as the visible marker.
