Eglise Saint-Pallais

Eglise Saint-Pallais stands beside the Abbaye aux Dames on the right bank of the Charente. The church began in the 12th century on the site of an earlier funerary basilica, then picked up Gothic changes over the centuries, including a flat flamboyant east end and an unusually squat bell tower.

It is a quiet companion to the abbey rather than a headline sight, but the layered Romanesque and Gothic details make it worth a short stop while exploring this side of Saintes.
