Prairie de la Palu is a protected stretch of wet meadow on the edge of Saintes, where the Charente valley feels much wilder than the city streets suggest. The 120-hectare Natura 2000 area has walking paths, birdlife, and signs explaining the plants and wetland habitats.
It is a good low-key stop if you want a break from Roman ruins and churches. Bring shoes that can handle damp ground, especially after rain.
