Saint-Medard is the old town's most satisfying church, a Romanesque building whose carved west front gives the little square much of its character. It is not large, but the proportions are handsome and the stonework rewards a slow look.
The church makes a natural centre point for a walk through Thouars. From here, lanes lead toward half-timbered houses, old gates and the river-facing edge of the medieval town.
