Thouars

Medieval Deux-Sevres town above the Thouet, with ramparts, Romanesque churches, and a ducal castle.

Thouars sits on a rocky bend above the Thouet, in the northern corner of Deux-Sevres where Poitou begins to lean toward the Loire. It is small, but the old town has weight: ramparts, towers, Romanesque churches, steep lanes and a long ducal castle looking across the river valley.

The pleasure here is walking the edge of the old fortress town. The Chateau des Ducs de La Tremoille is now a school, so you mostly read it from outside, but its scale explains why Thouars mattered. From there, loop through Saint-Medard Church, the Prince de Galles Tower, and the Prevost Gate.

Thouars is not a headline stop like Poitiers or La Rochelle. It works best for travellers already moving through western France who want a quieter medieval town with enough substance to fill a day, especially if they like old stone, river views and places that still feel lived in.

Getting There

Thouars has a railway station north of the old centre, with regional connections toward Saumur, Tours, Poitiers and Angers. From the station, the historic centre is about a 15-minute walk.

By car, Thouars is easiest as a stop between Poitiers, Saumur and the western Loire. The town is also on the Velo Francette cycle route, which makes it a good overnight or long lunch stop for riders crossing this part of western France.
