Porte de Pujols

The Porte de Pujols is the southern counterpart of the Porte de Paris — slightly smaller, of the same red brick, and at the head of the road that climbs up to the hilltop village of Pujols. It was built in the 14th century and is in unusually good condition, the upper crenellations and the corbelled machicolations all still legible.

The gate sits at a small irregular crossroads where the medieval grid breaks down. Cafes and small shops cluster around it; the pavement under the arch is one of the few spots in town where the original cobbles remain. Walking through it towards the river is the most evocative entry into the bastide.
