The old town of Clermont-Ferrand is compact and walkable. Trams connect the centre to the train station and the university areas. For the volcanic sites — Puy de Dôme, Vulcania, the Chaîne des Puys — a car is the most practical option; some seasonal bus services operate to the Puy de Dôme base station but are limited. The Panoramique des Dômes rack railway to the summit operates from the car park at Ceyssat, 15 kilometres west of the city.
Cycling is feasible around the flat urban area but the plateau approaches to the volcanic chain involve significant climbing. The tourist office on Place de la Victoire has maps of the city and regional transport options.
